A place to talk, not talk, wrestle, listen and experience being listened to
MaddyChristine Hope ~ Spiritual Director
Who is it for?
Everyone can benefit from Spiritual Direction. I meet with people who have been contemplative for years, and I meet with people who sense there is more while they have no idea what that more is or how to get it.
I meet with people who have been raised in the church and going to church is a weekly practice for them, and I meet with people who no longer find God within the 4 walls of the church. I meet with people who refer to God as Him and Father, people who connect with Jesus, and people who prefer to call God Spirit, Mother or Love. There is no box.
I meet with people curious about the practice called Spiritual Direction while they have never experienced it while I also have people in my practice who have been engaging in Spiritual Direction for years. Some come without much direction while others come with a very particular quest.
I would say Spiritual Direction is for you when you long to seek God and grow in your intimacy with God. It is also for those who feel they want to connect better with themselves.
What does a session look like?
A session lasts an hour. In a spiritual direction session, we will step out of our busy life and practice a different pace. We will go slow and silences can be common in a session.
We will start with silence and I will give you time to find yourself in a place of quiet. I might say a short prayer or guide a small meditation or breathing practice. After that, the silence is yours and you can take your time to settle yourself. You get to break the silence when you feel ready: some break the silence after a few minutes, some may stay silent for a lot longer.
Once you break the silence, you now have the space to bring anything into the session. You may be clear about what to talk about, perhaps something may have been pulling at you for a while. In other cases, the silence we just had might reveal what God would like you to focus on during our time together.
In this space, I will do a lot of listening to both you and the Spirit. Remember that difference pace? I will probably not respond to what you have shared immediately, I might hold some silence… Some questions might arise for me.
When I ask a question they are meant to bring you deeper into connection with yourself and God. I don’t ask questions merely to get them answered, a question might stir something deeper in you. And this is where that different pace can be lovely. An answer is not expected, you may want to sit with what you are feeling or pondering before sharing it.
In this way, we spend an hour listening together to what you say, what you might feel, and what God is whispering. It is very likely you gain insights and often they come like sweet surprises.
At the end of the hour, I will bring our conversation to a close with some silence, perhaps a blessing and we might look at what invitations you feel as we have come to the end.
Spiritual Direction is not something you need to prepare for ahead of time though some might look back on their month and see if they can sense a theme or topic for our time together.
Spiritual Direction is also not something that requires homework. I will not give you things to do for when we meet again. I might make a suggestion during a session or offer a spiritual practice, and they are merely an invitation. You can feel free to do with it as you please. If you feel drawn to something you pick it up, and you leave it when you don’t have that inkling. I will not check in with you about the things we discussed. I trust God does marvelous work in you in the time we don’t meet and a lot can happen in a month. You can revisit something we talked about, I will follow where you are at as you bring yourself to the session.
What does it cost?
I work with a sliding scale, which means that my fee runs between $60 and $125 per session. Together, we can find out where you fit on that scale. I do not want anyone to miss out on the powerful practice of spiritual direction, so please let me know when finances are an issue for you.
